Career - VW Polo GTI R5 - "Hawkes Bay Grip" Gravel Setup

Vehicle: Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 Surface: Gravel (New Zealand) Stage Focus: Hawkes Bay - Technical / Mixed Pace Description: This setup is engineered specifically for the twisty and technical nature of Hawkes Bay. Unlike high-speed desert stages, this configuration prioritizes mechanical grip and rotation to help the car pivot quickly through tight corners while maintaining composure on the faster linking sections.

Key Characteristics: 1.Alignment: Aggressive front camber (-2.00°) maximizes the contact patch during heavy cornering loads, essential for the grippy NZ gravel. The slight rear toe-in ensures stability when accelerating out of hairpins. 2.Brakes: A neutral 50% brake bias combined with high braking force (2,900 N-m) allows for aggressive weight transfer to rotate the car into corners without locking up the fronts too early. 3.Differential: Higher LSD lock values (44% Front / 45% Rear Driving) provide immediate drive off low-speed corners, preventing wheel spin on loose surfaces and ensuring the car shoots forward instantly. 4.Suspension & Damping: Lower ride height (42mm) lowers the center of gravity for better handling on smoother sections. The damping is tuned firm in compression (+5.00 Front) to resist bottoming out during hard braking, while softer rear rebound helps keep traction on exit. 5.Gearing: Shorter final drive (0.220) improves acceleration response, making the car feel punchy in the lower gears which are used most frequently on this stage. 6.Best For: Drivers who prefer a car that rotates easily on entry and offers strong acceleration out of slow, tight corners.

**Note:** This is a refined re-release of my previously published Hawkes Bay setup for the same car. It is a fine-tune against that earlier build — below are *only the items that changed* from the old version, plus the full settings for reference. ## Key Characteristics (changes vs. previous published setup) - **Brake Bias:** 50% → 66% — Matches my current standard; 50% was far too rear-biased and risky on high-speed gravel - **Ride Height (F & R):** 42 mm → 60 mm — Hawkes Bay's frequent jumps bottom out badly at 42 mm - **Front Anti-Roll Bar:** 8.75 → 12.03 N/mm — Old bar too soft for high-speed corner control - **Rear Anti-Roll Bar:** 3.25 → 9.75 N/mm — Old was near-softest, couldn't hold the car flat - **Bump Zone Division (F & R):** 0.60 → 0.72 mps — Smoother transition = better jump-landing absorption - **Camber (F / R):** -2.00° / -1.75° → -1.60° / -1.25° — Old values excessive for flowing dirt; less camber = more straight-line stability - **Differential — Front LSD:** DL 44% → 32%, BL 32% → 28%, Preload 58.33 → 50.00 N-m — Old locks over-aggressive; dialed back to my standard range - **Differential — Rear LSD:** DL 45% → 40%, BL 32% → 36%, Preload 58.33 → 66.67 N-m — Same; tighter BL for corner entry stability - **Damping (softened front):** F Slow Bump +5 → +3, F Fast Bump +5 → +3, F Slow Rebound +4 → +3, R Fast Bump +4 → +3 — Old values too stiff for constant bumps/jumps - **Gearing (full re-ratio):** 1st–5th 0.373/0.486/0.636/0.867/1.095 + FD 0.220 → 0.303/0.421/0.561/0.747/0.920 + FD 0.225 — Standard gravel ratios; 5th 0.920 for top speed on the flowing straights ---
